How to Grade Used Film Cameras: EX / VG / Good Explained

Grading is the language of the used camera trade. If your supplier’s grades are vague, your pricing and your returns are vague too.

Why a shared grading standard matters

In wholesale, the same words mean different things to different sellers. A clear standard keeps expectations aligned, makes unit-level pricing defensible, and dramatically reduces disputes after delivery.

The three grades we use

Grade A — Excellent (EX)

Clean covers with no cracks or missing trim, bright lettering, only light even wear from normal handling. All functions work as specified. A camera a retailer can display confidently as a top-condition example.

Grade B — Very Good (VG)

Visible but honest wear: brassing on corners, minor marks on covers, worn lettering in high-touch spots. Mechanically complete and fully functional. The value tier for price-sensitive buyers.

Grade C — Good

Heavier cosmetic wear — pronounced brassing, scuffs, faded trim — but everything still works. Sold clearly as a user-grade camera at a lower price point.

What grading does and does not cover

Cosmetic grade and mechanical condition are assessed separately, then priced together. A Grade B body with a freshly overhauled shutter can be a better buy than a prettier camera with untested mechanics. This is why unit-level documentation matters more than the letter on the label.

How to read a unit listing

A good habit: when comparing suppliers, compare their documentation, not just their grades. Two “VG” cameras from different sellers are rarely the same camera.

Frequently asked

Does grading guarantee a camera has been serviced? No. Grade describes condition; servicing is a separate process. Ask whether light seals were replaced and the shutter tested — a documented restoration adds real retail value.

Can customers tell the difference between grades? Yes, and that is the point: Grade A justifies a premium display price, Grade C fills a budget slot. Clear grades let you price with confidence.
